The Victory Class has, since 1934, enjoyed some of the best sailing conditions and facilities on the South Coast. These include all-tide racing in the Eastern Solent with the option of racing in more sheltered conditions within Portsmouth Harbour when necessary.
The 21' Victory keelboat was designed to be raced by a crew of three, although two people can campaign a Victory successfully and there are occasional single-handed races. There are convenient moorings at Haslar Marina - both pontoon and swinging - just 400 metres from the main start area.
Racing takes place three times a week from mid-April until mid-September - thereafter each Saturday, finishing in mid-October after some 90 races. The highlights of the season are Cowes Week, where the Class has its own start and the Westmacott One Design Regatta held off Portsmouth. A team-racing event is also held against the Royal Gibraltar Yacht Club, home to the only other Victory fleet. The class owns a yard in Old Portsmouth for winter lay-up, maintenance and storage and runs its own launch service across Portsmouth Harbour, with the launch frequently doubling as a committee boat.
During the season, we race on Tuesday and Thursday evenings with, on average, 12-15 boats turning out to do battle on the Solent. We also race on Saturday afternoons with numbers varying according to the time of year. Many also take part in the Portsmouth Sailing Club Frostbite Series extending the season until almost Christmas.
We now have 6 GRP Victorys racing on equal terms with the wooden boats. We believe this will ensure competitive, affordable racing for the foreseeable future. If you've ever fancied sailing dayboats on the Solent and like the cut-and-thrust of racing, please use the Contacts page to get in touch. We will generally have a response to you within 24 hrs.
Newcomers are welcome at anytime.
