The Victory Class enjoys some of the best sailing conditions on the South Coast. These include alltide
racing in the Solent, with the option of racing in more sheltered conditions within Portsmouth
Harbour when necessary. There are convenient moorings at Haslar Marina - both pontoon and
swinging - just 400 metres from the main start area. The Victory was designed to be raced by a crew
of three, although two people can campaign a Victory successfully and there are occasional
single-handed races.
Racing takes place three times a week from late April until mid-September - thereafter each Saturday
finishing in mid-October after some 90 races. The highlight of the season is Cowes Week, where the
Class has its own start. Abiennial team-racing event is also held against the Gibraltar Sailing Club,
home to the only other Victory fleet. The class owns a yard in Old Portsmouth for winter lay-up,
maintenance and storage and runs its own launch service across Portsmouth Harbour, with the
launch frequently doubling as a committee boat.
With the launch of the new 'GRP' Victory, the Victory Class has secured its
position as the premier day boat racing class in the Eastern Solent for
years to come.
Traditional values - modern methods
Portsmouth's traditional Victory Class one design racing fleet
has secured its future for the 21st century.
The black-hulled, clinker-built wooden day boat- familiar to Solent
sailors and visitors to Cowes Week for nearly 75 years - has been
built in glass resin plastic to ensure the continued success of one of
the most popular day boat racing classes on the South Coast.
The new 'GRP' Victory day boat - which is a faithful replica of one
of the most successful yachts in the class - and now competing
alongside its wooden siblings, guaranteeing that the
competitiveness of one design racing for which the Victory class is
renowned will survive in the Solent for generations to come.
Identical to her wooden predecessors, the new 'GRP' Victory shares
its strength, weight and excellent sea-keeping qualities. Thanks to
meticulous design and manufacture the 'GRP' Victory will compete
on level terms.
The decision to move to modern glass resin plastic building
methods was dictated by the significantly lower costs of
manufacture compared with a wooden equivalent and the easier
and lower maintenance routines which are more compatible with
busy modern lifestyles.
It is a bold and imaginative initiative which combines the strengths
of traditional one design racing with modern practicality. Success
depends on the skill of the sailor, rather than the size of his or her
pocket!
Competitive on the water....and sociable off it!
Off the water, the Victory Class offers a wide range of activities
throughout the year for members and their families. Membership of
Portsmouth Sailing Club, with its popular bar, is part of the
package and the Haslar Marina Lighthouse Bar is also a favourite
post-race meeting point. The class is proud of the wide age range
of its membership - from teenagers upwards - which successfully
blends the vitality of youthful new ideas with well-established
Solent racing traditions to form a dynamic, forward-looking club.
Strong Class Association
Funding for the design and construction work has come from the
Class's own resources and a talented and dedicated team of
members has spent four years bringing the new build project to its
successful conclusion.
Mentoring
New members are welcome and are offered the help of an
experienced class member as a mentor to assist in their introduction
to the racing and social activities.
